The IP-Quadrature consists of the following functional blocks:
- Input circuit
- Polarity and function selection
- Counters
- Interrupt logic
- IP interface logic
There are four quadrature decoder channels on the IP. These channels are independent, although some input termination options are implemented as a group of two channels.
Each channel has three inputs, called X, Y and Z. Usually X and Y are the two quadrature inputs.
And Z is an optional control or index input. If the channel is used as a general purpose counter, then each channel has its own 24-bit count register, 24-bit preset/comparator register and 24-bit output latch, as well as its own control and status registers.
The interrupt logic, polarity and function selection logic and IP interface logic are all located in a single 100-pin Xilinx programmable logic cell array (LCA).

Alternatively, the input can be TTL or similar logic level. the RS-422 input is biased at approximately 1.75 volts on one side, allowing direct connection of inputs from single-ended TTL, NMOS, CMOS or opto-couplers. When operating in this mode there is one volt of hysteresis on the receiver to reduce noise. IP-Quadrature can be converted from RS-422 input to TTL input by removing the RS-422 termination resistor network from the socket. A termination network for the TTL input can be switched in electronically via software.
